Ones where you would have to be in the steerage of the boat - which is under the deck and crowded would cost 35-40 dollars - if you wanted better places - a room for example it was about $100 or up... quite expensive .... at that time - they would also ask you before you board the ship - Do you have at least $50 so that you would be able to survive - but they would check you in Ellis Island before you could enter the country - many did not even make it into the United States - people often were sent back .
