You will have to consider the value of the horse, the money it takes to bring the foal to market, and how strong the market is. Some breeders actually LOOSE money by the end of the year. (Like me!) It's a very hit-or-miss business, and no matter what you breed, it takes a lot of money to do it. Quality horses cost money, while cheap horses rarely produce high-dollar foals.

There really is no one answer to this question as the amount of money a breeder will make varies greatly.Some breeders turn a very tidy profit yearly, typically these breeders produce high quality race and show horses. Other breeders break even and most lose money on the breeding endeavor. This is due to the fact that horses are expensive animals to keep and can cost upwards of $3,000 per year, per animal or more just for feed, farrier, vet, and basic shelter. So by the time a horse is sold the breeder has lost money. This doesn't even include the cost of the stud fee or mare care, or care and feeding during pregnancy.
