How much does it cost to buy a moon rock?

NASA only brought back a few hundred pounds or so and they are not for sale - priceless might be a good term to use. When foreign governments or lucky universities are given samples it is usually only in tiny pieces or a bit of dust. Meteorites that have been confirmed to be from the moon (tektites) are worth millions for large pieces - several pounds.

Moon rocks retrieved by the Apollo program are not for sale. Their value could only be determined at auction, and would go for a premium considering that they're a part of a historic human adventure. Those that were distributed as gifts are few and far between. The best you could hope for would be to find a sample derived from a meteorite that originated from the moon. A 3x3 mm piece of lunar meteorite is currently (2009) for sale on a commercial meteorite website for $120 US.

Since the Moon's gravity is about 1/6 that of the Earth, we have to multiply Moon weight by 6 if we want to convert (approximately) Moon weight to Earth weight.

In this case, a rock weighing 8.5 lbs (3.9 kg) on the Moon would weigh approximately 51 lbs (23.4 kg) on the Earth.

Edit: I know it's been said before, but a kilogram isn't a unit of weight. It's a

unit of mass. The correct units are "Newtons". Ideally you should also use

"pounds-force" instead of pounds.

There is no value for pieces of the moon rocks. It is illegal to own or purchase any of pieces of the moon bought back by the Apollo astronauts. The only exception are the astronauts who traveled to the moon. They were each given small samples to keep after the scientists had examined them.
