I just retired from the united associations pipe fitters of America. I was a welder in that union for 44 years. All you need to do in look in your phone book under trade unions for plumbers and pipe fitters. You say I dont want to be one of those guys I want to weld. A welder gas or electric is a tool of the pipe fitting trade . Call them up and explain you want to join. They will have you come down and talk to them. after you have joind there local union they will teach you how to be a fitter or a welder. I you are all ready a certified welder through a vocation school that is more the better for you. my union in Dallas Tx local #100. have taken in good welders and put them right to work. First you have to prove you have the skill to make sound welds that will pass an X-ray. the health and welfare benefits or better than any other trade you can work in unless you go to work for Uncle Sam

You carefully cut the pipe, then if you can push it apart enough to fit one nut and one'olive on each end of the pipe. Now seat both ends in the union. At this point you hold the centre of the union with a wrench and tighten each end nut while pushing the pipe in towards the union. When both ends feel tight, hold each end nut with a wrench and give one final 1/4 turn. That was with a standard brass union, now you can also fit a 'sharkbite' with no wrench, just firmly pushing each end in. With 'sharkbite', however you MUST make sure the pipe ends are smooth and have no sharp edges.
