As of 2001, it was recorded in the Guardian that SAS soldiers earned between £25,000 and £80,000 per annum, depending upon special skills and allowances. A private in any conventional army regiment earned a basic £13,000. Until 1980, SAS pay was little more than the basic, but it was raised in that year in order to retain skilled soldiers that might otherwise be tempted by the very lucrative private sector, where skilled ex-soldiers are in high demand.

The truth is that although the SAS pay scales are higher than standard infantry, accepting a lower rank in the SAS than in their previous regiment means that some SAS soldiers may take pay cuts to become the best in the world.
