That depends greatly on the application(specific vehicle) and do you need diagnostics or not. if a profesional shop does it and if they inspect belt/tensioner and related items it will natually be more time involved than just installing an alternator. after alternator is installed if they actually check the amperage output and voltage drops positive and negative to make sure and verify your repair. just installing alt. and saying goodbye you should be ready to spend 1-1.5 hrs and i would expect to have an additional .5 for the testing. shop rates greatly vary due to locations and the type of shop. i would seek out a ase certified shop/mechanic or use one recommended by a friend. Remember that car parts are not all alike and there is a difference as to why some cost greater than others and it's not always because of marketing. if someone wants a really cheap part installed the mechanic can always clean the old (broken) part up and install it for a very low price, it won't work but that's the POINT of this comment! you usaully do get what you pay for and don't expect something for nothing or more than likely that's what you'll get. no one wants to get ripped off either, the customer or the shop
