How much does it cost to build 1 mile of mountain bike trail?

It depends on what you're looking for in a bike. You can always get a $100 so-called "Mountain Bike" from a big-box store, but these will not perform in any capacity off-road. There are a few grades (or price divisions) of mountain bikes, based on component spec. Prices also vary based on suspension. A "hardtail" (only front suspension) will be far less expensive then a full-suspension bike. Most manufacturers only produce full-suspension starting at the mid-level or enthusiast level.

Hardtail

Entry level Hardtail: $400 - $700

Mid-Level Hardtail: $800 - $1,300

Enthusiast Level Hardtail: $1,400 - $2,500

Race Level Hardtail: over $2,500

Full Suspension

Entry level: $1,000 - $1,700

Mid-Level: $1,800 - $2,300

Enthusiast: $2,400 - $3,500

Race Level: Over $3,500

That's really hard to answer, as it depends on how good stuff you want, what kind of MTB-ing you want to do, and if you're buying new or used. If you want to DH and are looking at new stuff I'd say USD 1000 (or more) for the bike, and then USD 200(or more) for protective gear

If you want to XC(cross-country) and want all new stuff you can get away with maybe half of that.
