How much does it cost to fix a horses broken leg?

I live in Nevada, and the X-rays, temporary splint (until the swelling went down) and urgent care cost $250, then the Ortho charged another $640 to put a fiberglass toe to knee cast on, two weeks later.

I still have to get it removed in a few weeks, so that'll be even more money and he mentioned another set of Xrays...it's going to be over a thousand dollars, easily. And this was without any kind of surgery or screws.

And I don't have insurance and not eligible for Medicaid. :(

Very few fractured legs can be fixed. But it depend on what exactly is broken. Cannon bones, no fix for that. If it is a splint fracture, its possible, with loads of stall rest.

Barbaro (April 29, 2003 - January 29, 2007) was an American thoroughbred who decisively won the 2006 Kentucky Derby, but shattered his leg two weeks later in the 2006 Preakness Stakes, ending his racing career and eventually leading to his death.

On May 20, 2006, Barbaro ran in the Preakness Stakes as a heavy favorite, but, after he false-started, he fractured three bones in and around the fetlock of his right hind leg. The injury ruined any chance of a Triple Crown in 2006 and ended his racing career. The next day, he underwent surgery at the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania for his injuries. In July he developed laminitis in his left rear leg. He underwent five further operations, and his prognosis varied during an exceptionally long stay in the Equine Intensive Care Unit at the New Bolton Center. While his right hind leg eventually healed, a final risky procedure on it proved futile because the colt soon developed further laminitis in both front legs. His veterinarians and owners concluded that he could not be saved, and Barbaro was euthanized on January 29, 2007.[1]

The great match race was set, it was to be Ruffian against the Derby winner of 1975,Foolish Pleasure. Both horses broke cleanly, with Foolish Pleasure a step in front, but it was only a matter of seconds before they were going head to head. Ruffian stuck her nose in front, the opening quarter was run in 22 1/5. At this time Ruffian started pulling away from Foolish Pleasure, first a head, then a neck, then by half a length. Suddenly, the jockeys heard a snapping sound. Then Foolish Pleasure was in front by a length, two, three.... the announcer called out with disbelief, "Ruffian has broken down!" but the great filly kept running. She ground her leg into the track but there was no stopping her. By the time she was pulled up, her hoof dangled uselessly and it was all anyone could do to get her off the track.

They operated on Ruffian all through the night but to no avail, she began running and ripped the cast off upon coming out of the anesthesia, causing further damage to her leg. The men and the vets around her had tried to perform a miracle surgery and it had only furthered her agony. Shortly after 2 am, Ruffian was put down, and she was free to run once more. She was buried around 9 pm that evening at belmont park, with her nose pointed towards the finish line.

Dakota Stable's Principal Affair, a four-year-old filly trained by Thomas Victor Smith, broke both front legs during Friday's feature race at Churchill Downs, a $47,200 allowance race.

With jockey Shane Sellers aboard, Principal Affair broke down going into the first turn of the 1 1/16-mile race. Sellers was thrown to the track but sustained only minor injuries and walked off the track unassisted. The rest of the field was pulled up on the backstretch, and Principal Affair was euthanized on the track. Churchill Downs officials declared the race no contest..

Costs thousands on thousands, with not a good prognosis.
