Depends what size, style, gender, material, and such.
Pattern envelopes will tell you the exact amount that you'll need.
Earlier I made a junior's small stretch babydoll tee - and it took 7/8 yards.
it takes at least 14$ to buy the right materil for it so it depends

A t-shirt is permeable because the fabric has enough space that the water or liquid can take a shape able to escape the fabric.

yes you can! for example take a American girl shirt measure it on a piece of fabric and cut it out then do that one more time sew them together and you got a shirt!
It's for tucking into your pants. When you bend over your shirt isn't pulled out because of the extra fabric. You can take the shirt to a tailor and have the extra fabric chopped off if you want to wear it un-tucked and not look like Superman in a cape.
Because of the interaction of the tension in the vertical and horizontal fibers (warp and weft), the fabric produced is much less likely to stretch than for example a knitted or crocheted fabric. Take the difference between a cotton tee-shirt and a pair of cotton pants. The t-shirt is a knitted fabric and most likely cotton pants will be woven. You can easily tell how a t-shirt will stretch much more than the fabric of the pants.

The amount will vary based on the style of shirt you will be making. ( short or long sleeves, pockets, collar, pullover or a tailored shirt which will be longer) If you have a purchased pattern, look on the back of the pattern and it wiil tell you what you will need based on the style of the pattern. Usually should take approximately 3 yards for a basic short-sleeved shirt.
To BEGIN, as you said, you buy fabric or cotton if you want to make a shirt or pants...and so on or if you want to decorate a shirt only you can go to WAL-MART and get a plain shirt to decorate. But if you want to make it, you take the fabric or whatever material you want and buy and sewing machine and just put two pieces of your material together like you want it and when you sow it, that side that your sewing is the side that will be inside out. Just to let you know. P.S. When your done, turn it inside out and you have your piece of clothing. GOOD LUCK!
The amount of fabric needed will depend on the style of dress you are making, the size, and other factors. If you are making a simple dress with a skirt that is not full, it won't take as much fabric as one that has a fuller skirt. In order to buy the right amount of fabric for the dress you want to make, choose the pattern and the amount of fabric that is needed to make it will be listed on the back of the package.
