Then how is the melting at the poles going to affect the oceans when it isn't any different than ice in a glass of water...when the ice melts the liquid produced just takes place of the ice and the water in the glass does not overflow?

I've has more volume than water so the water displacement is more when ice than when water, so if the artic melted sea levels would actually fall.

There is no land at the North Pole, it's all ice. But the sea ice there is rarely more than 4 metres thick (13 feet).

In Greenland the ice at the centre is over three kilometres thick (almost 2 miles), sloping down towards the coast where the land is covered with snow up to 10 metres deep (33 feet).
