Please check your coin again. It's either not 1954 or not a Walking Liberty half. Halves dated 1916-47 carried the Walking Liberty design. Benjamin Franklin's image was on the half dollar from 1948 to 1963.
A 1954 US half dollar has a bust of Ben Franklin on the obverse, not Miss Liberty. Franklin half's are common, if it shows any wear the value is just for the silver about $10.00.
$1.00 in 1954 had the same buying power as $8.79 in 2016.
Although it does have the Liberty Bell on the reverse of the coin, it's a Franklin half dollar. All Franklin half dollars are considered common, if it has any wear, it's valued only for the silver, about $12.00 as of 3-12-11

1954 is not a key date for Italian 5 lire coins - depending on condition, its probably worth between 10 cents and a dollar. 1956, on the other hand, could be worth several dollars in uncirculated condition.

In mint uncirculated condition, it would be worth $40-60. In normal used condition, it's worth exactly $10.
A mint condition uncirculated note would be worth $325-375. Very good used notes are worth about $20.
If it's a 1954 British shilling, it contains no silver, and one can easily be found for less than one US dollar. If it's Australian, then it's 50% silver, and is worth at least $1.50 US.
