The lethal dose of an opiate varies from person to person depending upon their tolerance.

Oxycontin is a central nervous center depressant. When a person uses this drug it shuts down the nervous system one level at a time. A lethal dosage is reached when the individual's nervous system is depressed to the point that it causes the cessation of respiration and cardiac arrest. Quite plainly the person stops breathing and the heart shuts down resulting in death.

Sleep aids, tranquilizers, and alcohol along with numerous other drugs are also CNS depressant. When Oxycontin is combined with any of these other drugs tolerance is decreased and the amount needed to administer a lethal dose like wise is decreased.

As a general rule of thumb if a person has never taken Oxycontin before, then it is likely that their base line tolerance very low and that even a small dose can mean the difference between life or death. If you are researching this question for any other reason than a purely academic one, take a moment to ponder this. You might as well be asking, "How high of a cliff do I have to jump off of before the fall will actually kill me?" The answer will still be the same. It varies depending on the person, the cliff, the area, and many other factors, but regardless it's probably not a good idea to do it. No second chances.

Depends on your tolerance.

Oxycontin is an opioid. Opioids are synthetic agents that have similar pharmacological effects as derivatives of opium, morphine, and codeine.

The toxic dose of morphine, in a normal individual, is 60mg and the fatal dose is 240mg. Of course this varies by tolerence level, which can be affected by many factors. So don't go thinking you can take 60mg of an opiate or opioid and be fine. this is just a generalization.

DEATH by overdose of opiates usually results from asphyxia brought on by respiratory failure. Pupils constrict at first and later become dilated as poisoning advances. The person will also perspire incresingly as poisoning advances, body temperature falls. Attention must be especially focused on maintaining respiration. If someone you know takes opiates and is displaying these symptoms it is best to call a doctor.

Because of its structure and the varying effects that class of drug has on the body, a lethal dosage is not known. However, comparatively few people have died from overdosing on it, and many were noted to have taken other drugs as well (the drug interaction is thus a major part of its lethality). Provided a person remains within the prescribed limits they should be perfectly safe.

Well it depends. If you mean overdose enough to die...then if were talking the largest 80s then it could be anywhere from 5 to 15 all depending on your own tolerance the human body is an amazing achievement of science and we can make our bodies learn to tolerate and take way more into our systems and live then we actually were meant to...so just of the top of my head take the whole bottle....thatll def do the trick...but why overdose just snort some roxys and get high and go on living another day...oxycontin is overated anyways because its just government heroin just go to the source heroin its cheaper and lasts longer....and you can alwayz get your perscription filled at the local dope mans house..lol...but no seriously pills these days are getting out of hand...im rambling now but i remember when oc 40s and 80s were pretty much unheard of amongst the young crowd and the ones who did know had a crap load from parents or whatever and we did a lot i mean a lot you can get up to like as many 80s a day you can afford thats how high you habbit can get....

There is no set amount as each person is different, and what can kill 1 person may not affect another person. There are guidelines in place to avoid this and if you take them the way that you should and for legitiment reasons then overdose and death are very rare! The other major drawback for oxycontin is that most people become tolerant over time and will have to take more to receive the same level of pain relief and this is where the trouble for alot of people start. If their doc will not raise the dose (most won't) or change the meds. then the patient is left with a big problem over either taking extras which will cause them to run out early leaving them to fall into the nightmare of withdrawal which will cause them to become disparate to find meds anywhere to avoid this. Because oxycontin is a time release med. it allows for very high doses per pill. Only patients that have been on oxycontin for a while and are opiate tolerant should be given anything 40mg. and above as that amount can kill someone that is not built up to taking that amount!! Abusing this drug and or crushing it to break the time release coating is in very real danger!!!! Also mixing it with other drugs or alcohol will make it lethal! The most dangerous and common mix that most addicts favor is benzos like valium or zannax!! 95% of abusers that die, have 1 or both those drugs in their body!!! I cannot stress enough how DANGEROUS it is to mix benzos with this!!!! There are patients that do need both and are proscribed both very carefully and only if the benefits out weigh the risks and are very closely monitored by their docs.!!!!!!!

There is no set answer. People who have taken narcotics chronically can build up a high tolerance. For someone that is not tolerant of opioids as little as 40-80 mg can be lethal.
