If they are drinking milk from their mother, next to nothing, they will only begin to eat forage (hay and grain) at approximately 5 months (this is when they will begin to really need it). At this point in time a 40 kg bag of grain will last over a month. However, if you need to feed the calf milk replacer, it runs about 40 bucks a bag and could last under a month.
They should be weaned at about 10 months (if on milk replacer than about 6 months to save money), at this time they will need more grain. Then a 40 kg bag of grain may last a month to 3 weeks (depending on what kind you are feeding you are probably looking at about 10-15 bucks per bag).
Babies are easy to care for and don't cost too much, they start to eat more at about 10 months old, it is best to research what feeds you feed them before you start to feed them, protein is important (keep that in mind), a feed that has about 14% protein is good and usually only costs 12 dollars per bag.
An average calf may cost around 50 cents per pound for drop calves (calves that are newborn). This price may vary for your region.
That all depends on where you live, what type and size of that cow is, and the health of it as well.
Now it is about a dollar a pound
