34 bucks an hour and work 12 hour shifts. Equals about $5,000 every 2 weeks.
a driller on an semi-submersible deepwater drilling rig makes over 140k a year. pay also depends on rig type and rig location
It depends on what part of the the country you are in.
On the north slope of Alaska wages tend to be higher.
I currently work in Alaska and my wage as a floor-hand/roughneck is $31.00 an hour, plus OT and safety bonus.
A typical 2 week hitch will bring in close to $5,500 per month net.
Land rigs:
I can only answer for what roughnecks make in the US, on land rigs. Salary goes from $8.00 for roustabouts up to twice that for some companies. A driller, who has years of experience may make $7,000 for two weeks (14 straight days work) of 12 hour shifts, and a roughneck on the rig crew can expect to make from $12 to $35 per hour plus overtime. Overtime is a big part of pay.
New Hire - 22.00 to 24.50 per hour Chainhand - 22.00 to 24.50 per hour Motorhand - 22.50 to 25.00 per hour Derrickhand - 23.75 to 28.00 per hour Driller - 28.00 to 34.00 per hour These are wages for land based drilling rigs in the United States only
Offshore drilling:
Galley hands These positions are usually contracted out through catering companies, so their pay is determined (and paid) by the catering company for which they work.
Roughneck/Roustabout average pay ranges between $20 - $23 per hour
Derrickman average pay ranges between $30 - $35 per hour
Driller average pay ranges $36 - $39 per hour
The above pay rates are based on 40 hours of straight time. Everything beyond that is overtime pay, paid at time and a half, based on seven 12 hour days per week. Most of the hitch rotations are 14 or 21 day hitches, meaning they work 14 or 21 days, then are home 14 or 21 days. The overseas rig workers, however, usually work 28 day hitches.
All other positions below are salary based instead of hourly pay:
Tour pusher (pronounced 'tower') pay averages $105,000 - $ 125,000 per year, depending on the company and the location.
OIM (Offshore Installation Managers) averages $120,000 - $150,000 per year, also depending on the company and the location.
Rig Managers (sometimes called Rig Supervisors) are over all of the above positions, so their pay is considerably higher and depends on several factors, and their pay range is much broader than the ones above. The average base pay for rig managers is $175,000 to $185,000, plus stock options and bonuses, which usually adds up to $350,000 to over $450,000 per year.
Consultants Drilling rigs also have 'Consultants' who work for the Operator, which is the oil company that contracted (hired) the rig to drill for them. The consultants work the same hitch rotations as the other employees on the drilling rigs. Consultants earn approximately $150,000 to $250,000 per year, depending on location, experience and the Operator (oil company) pay scale.
Geographically Pay scale is also based geographically for all positions. Those who live in the US and work on rigs in other countries will make about 25% to 30% more than those who work on rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, with travel expenses usually paid for by the emplolyer.
Update April, 2015: Since the recent downturn of oil prices, the pay scale has been reduced considerably, with many of the employees being demoted to lesser paying positions, or even laid off. Many drilling rigs are being stacked (shut down) due to this, and it's uncertain as to when the oil prices will take an upturn.
i think about around $1000 a week or mabye more
