I've seen variations, but this is what is in the rules.
In the standard Monopoly game each player starts with !,500. This can be made up in various ways according to which edition of Monopoly you have, so it doesn't really matter which denominations you use. If playing the Speed Die rules each player receives an extra 1,000. A modern Monopoly set starts with 20,580, earlier editions started with 15,140. Darrow's 1934 set contained a mere 9,000.
