AnswerThe median expected salary for a typical Social Worker (BSW) in the United States is $41,282. AnswerQuick facts from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics:

* Seventy-one percent of all social workers are women. Their average annual salary is $30,108.

* The average annual salary for male social workers is $34,372.

AnswerIt varies, but chances are the starting salary will be lower than most other people graduating with Master's degrees. Like most things, it depends on how hard you want to work at it. It is quite possible to earn 100K+ but as one of my instructors told me once, "Don't expect to buy you wife many fur coats." AnswerThe median expected salary for a typical Social Worker (BSW) in the United States is $41,187.

As a graduate of an MSW program in 2003, I made $16/hr ($33280/yr). I made a decision to stay in the medical/health-care field, as this industry tends to pay better than many others, like child welfare. Now, in 2008, I make $29.50/hr ($61360). Presently, I earn this at one job, as a manager in a hospice program. I've made this much (or more) the past two years, however, it required some creativity- a full time job as a clinician, plus some sideline work doing family therapy on a contract basis, or picking up 'on-call' shifts at a local hospital.

The answer varies greatly from state to state and where you are working. I had been living outside of Pittsburgh and made approx. $30,000 after graduating with my MSW. I think this is fairly typical of that area.

I now live in Los Angeles and work for a federal government agency that pays over $60,000 for new MSW's.

Typically, MSW's make the most working in hospitals or schools and the least working for community social service agencies.
