Housing notifications are usually left up to state laws, but the time for notification is usually 30 days in most states. If there is a lease for a determined period, 60 days should be given and the roommate leaving should help find a new roommate because that person would be responsible for the rent for the entire lease if no other roommate is found.

∙ 14y agoIdeally, as much time as possible. If you have a good relationship with your roommate, and things change in your life such that you want to be elsewhere, your ongoing open communication would involve them already being aware of what you need and want in life. Like I said," ideally". I believe the most ethical way to go -- which means it feels like the right thing to do, even if the hard thing to do -- is to give them at least 30 days notice. That would be the bare minimum, esp. for a good roommate situation. As soon as you are feeling there is more likelihood than not that you will not be choosing to continue to live with the person, it will be better for both of you to let them in on your thinking.
Think about the old adage and treat them how you would want to be treated in the situation. Would you want a sure decision at the 30 mark or would you like to know ahead, to give you more time to consider your options?
It's not easy telling your roomie something that will make them mad, but you will feel better doing the right thing, and it will/should give the other person -- who will be upset no matter when they hear it -- some good feelings towards you for being brave to tell you sooner rather than later..
