The poisonous dose depends upon the size and health status of the dog, the exact type of rat poison and the formulation of the poison. Rat poison is fairly toxic stuff, so even a very small amount (less than a dog kibble) can be fatal for dogs.

I'm about to find out. I will not tolerate neighbors having a pit bull right next to my children, with only a small fence in between them.

Response:

Let me see if I get this right... you're contemplating what sounds like a potential felony or series of felonies, without trying to handle your own security or involving the authorities in order to protect your children? So they can visit you in jail???

Let's go a little further: I get that you're afraid for your kids. But I don't think breaking the law(s) in a serious way(s), torturing an animal, and blood-red antagonizing your neighbors sounds like the solution to me.

If you're afraid for your kids' safety, may I suggest you find a better way? One that doesn't end in jail, the morgue or on "Cops!" TV show? One that keeps you in your kids' lives for when they really need protection or help?

If you think your dog has ingested poison, or another animal that was poisoned (such as a rat that ate rat poison), he should be taken immediately to the vet.
