A general contractor usually is in charge of an entire construction project. You hire a general contractor to build a home or commercial structure. He's responsible for everything it takes to produce that structure. Usually he contracts for the plumbing and electrical work to be done by subcontractors. Often he subcontracts everything.
Every General Contractor operates differently. Our business charges an hourly rate of $35/hr. However, for a home build we let the home owner negotiate what is best for them. We may charge a percentage on top of materials for labour or we charge a rate per square foot, or keep the hourly rate...typically whatever works out to be cheaper for the customer
A general contractor license can be used to start your own contracting company and build clientele. You can also become a member of an already existing contracting company.

Get a contractor!
Building a house requires a lot of knowlege in the construction business. If you do not have this knowlege it would be recommended that you higher a general contractor that can organize all the vendors who will come in. For example make sure the foundation hole is dug before the cement contractor shows up.
I want to build a deck on the back of my home. Is this hard to do if you are not a contractor and what types of tools do I need?
Choosing someone to build a new patio deck can be challenging. You may want to ask a home-owner's association about a recommendation and to ask a contractor what they would charge. In addition, always get references from the people you are interviewing and make sure they have the appropriate licenses and insurance to do their job.
You can do research on a contractor that may build a deck at www.hometips.com, www.deckandharbor.com, and at www.buildmeadeck.com. At these sites you can compare different ratings as well as different things they can build.
I think you would probably be better off hiring a professional contractor to build a deck for you. It would save a lot of time and a lot of headaches.
