no it just takes a little tank and that's about. the tank does not have to be really big. the most space it takes is a little corner. you can go to a pet shop & get a small tank. ut all depends on what type of turtle you get!!! :)

I have a wild eastern Box turtle my cousins found in Georgia and they gave it to me. (i live in Florida) and it is about 13 to 16 years old and i am making a wooden turtle pen that's going to go in my back screened porch. Its about 6 feet in length and 3 feet 41 inches width. Right now i am keeping him in a 99 court storage box and he seems to like that to, even though such little space is not enough. The smallest space should be around 4' by 4' or 5' 4' somewhere around that sized. While there is no limit at how large the pen may be. (ID1182214512 and TG300 are both me) srry just wanted to point that out.

Studies show EBTs spend their whole life (which can be as long as 100 years) on a two to four acre home range. Population density is important to reproduction because they mate purely by chance meetings. They are solitary animals and have no desire for companionship other than the brief moments when they meet and mate. Consequently there can be many on any one acre of suitable habitat or just a few. Studies have also shown that some adults may wander apparently aimlessly off a home range but the reason for that is not known and it is the exception to the rule. Normally each one possesses a homing instinct and it is believed that they stay on and get back to their home range by using the sun to navigate.

Can a eastern box turtle share a tank with a eastern painted turtle and mate with it?

No, different types of turtles can only mate with each other if they are both part of the same sub species. for instance yellow belly sliders and red eared sliders can mate. but a painted turtle and box turtle would not mate.
