Most experts recommend 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Ratios from 1:3 to 1:5 are all similar to the sugar concentrations found in the nectar of hummingbird-pollinated flowers, but solutions stronger than 1:3 may not provide enough water, especially in hot, dry wearther, and those weaker than 1:5 may not attract the birds.

  • Use only white granulated sugar, not honey, powdered sugar or artificial sweeteners.
  • Food coloring is unnecessary and possibly harmful.
  • Sugar water spoils quickly, so be sure to change the feeder solution every 2 to 4 days even if there is some left.
  • Cleaning the feeder thoroughly at least once a week will help prevent spoilage and diseases transmission.
  • Boiling the solution isn't necessary but may help delay spoilage.
  • Always refrigerate any leftover solution.

Will orioles scare hummingbirds away from a my hummingbird feeder?

Not really. Most likely when the orioles come the hummingbirds will fly away. However, when the oriole leaves the hummingbirds will return again. If the hummingbirds do not return put up a oriole feeder that should keep it away from the hummingbird feeder.

What do you put in a hummingbird feeder?

Dissolve 1 part sugar in four parts water. A part can be any volume as long as you use the same volume to measure both the sugar and the water (1/4 cup sugar to 1 cup water, 2 tablespoons sugar to 8 tablespoons water, 1 yogurt cup sugar to 4 yogurt cups water, etc.). Red food coloring isn't necessary and may be harmful to the birds' health.

When to change the sugar water in a hummingbird feeder?

When I first put my food out in early spring (when it's still freezing at night, before my first sighting), I change it out once a week. After I see my first bird, I change it every 4 days or so until summer. Once it's hot out, though, as my feeder hangs from under the roof of the porch and get quite heated, I change it every 3 days - any longer and the food will start to sour. Also, it's important to thoroughly clean the feeder with hot water, and mild soap (be sure to rinse well). I use organic sugar (evaporated cane juice). I typically have more activity at my feeder than my neighbors, even without any flowers or garden to speak of, and with the feeder right there on the porch. I'm not sure if they like the organic sugar better or not - it's just what I use - but I know I change the food more often than my neighbors, so I suspect that is the real reason - yummy food!

Directions for making safe hummingbird food: Mix 1 part sugar with 4 parts water and bring to a boil to kill any bacteria or mold present. Cool and fill feeder.

Do you feed a hummingbird cold or warm water?

I assume you are referring to the sugar-water with which you fill a hummingbird feeder. Always, always, ALWAYS boil the water when preparing it - it will kill bacteria and will allow you to leave the feeder out longer before the mold starts to grow. Afterward, put the sugar-water in the refrigerator to cool down - NEVER feed it still warm. Make sure to clean out and refill your feeder every 5-7 days.

If you put wasp repellent on a hummingbird feeder will it also repel the humming birds?

It would be best if it did, because anything that repels insects may be dangerous to hummingbirds (would you spray DEET on your dinner plate?). You can reduce problems with wasps by making sure your feeder doesn't leak and wiping any spilled sugar water off the outside of it every time you clean and refill it. If you do this and wasps are still a problem, buy a yellowjacket trap at a hardware store or home improvement center, fill it halfway with sugar water, and hang it where your feeder usually hangs. The wasps that would have been hanging around your feeder will climb in and drown. When you stop seeing wasps visiting the trap, you can rehang your feeder in that spot.
