It depends. I work for a newspaper delivery company and we currently pay about $0.10 a paper during the week and $0.20 on Sunday. It will depend on how many papers you are throwing, but I'd count on about $400-$600 a month.

All the suggestions for tipping carriers are SO off, it makes me sick. Although this one suggests a fairer amount than most, it is still not on par with what should be suggested, realistically. I am a newspaper carrier. I pay for my bags, which I bag my papers in everyday (double on rainy days), I pay for my vehicle, insurance, gas, and because I deliver the paper 365 days a year--more frequent oil changes, tire replacement, brakes. The wear and tear on our vehicles goes without saying. Most people tip a waiter/waitress more money for visiting their table a few times than we get for throwing you your paper 365 days a year. I am NOT an employee of the newspaper. I pay for your papers, they reimburse me a smaller amount. I get no benefits, I pay my own taxes out of my pay. It is like a very poorly paid small business. If you are receiving good service from your carrier--$52.00 would be an appropriate tip ($1.00 per week). Weekend customers can cut that in half. But if you can afford it, we can use as much as we can get. I have almost 300 customers and receive only about $400. each and every Christmas. That is pitiful!

I usually tip $2.00 to $5.00 a month for seven-day-a-week delivery. If I tip $5.00, I don't feel obligated to tip at Christmas, but if I can afford it, I will. With the slowing economy, carriers often do not get paid by customers or they receive bad checks, which ends up being even more costly.

Most people don't really understand the ridiculously low pay a delivery person (carrier) makes. Because I used to work at the local newspaper office, I saw what the carriers go through for their small wages.

Carriers are charged by large newspaper companies for the papers, rubber bands, and plastic wrap for inclement weather. They are billed every week or month. Many people think that if they don't pay for their paper, or if they are late paying, the newspaper company is the one who has to wait for their money, but that isn't true. They get their money from the carriers (often children),who must pay them, and if a subscriber fails to pay, the carrier often loses money. Plus, the carriers must drive to the newspaper building in the wee hours of the morning, pick up their papers, take them home, roll them, and rubber band them, etc. They use their own vehicles and pay for their own gas, for only a few pennies profit per paper. Yes, I wrote that correctly: only a few pennies per paper, about 3c - 5c. At that rate, they often do not profit at all when more than one or two people fail to pay. On bad routes where there are many customers who don't pay, it is hard to keep a good delivery person.

Subscribers can pay the delivery person directly, but if payment is made in advance, they run the risk of losing their money if the carrier quits and another takes over without turning over the money. If you pay the newspaper directly, that money is credited toward the carrier's bill, which is best for both you and the carrier.

I should also mention that the metal boxes that people use to buy a paper are also paid for by a person, not the newspaper company, and that person must buy the papers from the company to fill the box. Many people put in their quarter or fifty cents and take more than one paper, which ends up hurting a low-paid worker, not the giant newspaper company.

$1.00 a week would be appreciated. All the suggestions for tipping carriers are so off, it makes me sick! I am a newspaper carrier. I pay for your newspaper and am paid a lesser amount by the newspaper company. I pay for the bags that I bag my customers papers in, each and every day. When it rains, I use two bags for each and every paper. I use my own vehicle, which includes paying my insurance, gas, and because I do deliver the newspaper 365 days a year, more frequent oil changes, tire replacement, brake replacement. Wear and tear on my vehicle is extreme. I am considered an "Independent Contractor," which means I am not considered an employee of the newspaper. I get no health benefits, no wages, no bonuses, and am responsible for my own taxes on what I make from the subscriptions--it is like a poorly paid, self-employed, small business. If you are receiving good service, from your carrier, then, aside from occasional smaller tips throughout the year, at Christmas you should be tipping your carrier about $52.00 (or approx. a dollar a week), half of that for weekend-only delivery, more for special delivery instructions. Most people tip their waiter/ waitress more, for one meal than they tip us for 365 days of delivery, with all of the expenses we incur. THAT is pitiful!

The usual tip for a News Paper Delivery Person is whatever their customer decides to give them. Some may give a small gift while others prefer to give money and some give nothing.
