how much did miners get paid in the 1800's?

Miners in those days got paid by the ton. I was told by my great grandfather that when started mining in the 20's that he started out at 5 cents a ton for the first year he worked. You also have to remember that there was no machinery in those days so all the coal had to mined and loaded by hand.

they didn't get paid, they had to pay money and the money they get is from the gold they find.

30 Shillings (30/-). The miners didn't like the idea of a license which turned into a protest that later turned into a rebellion that was known as "The Eureka Stockade"
