This would depend on the breed of chicken you have. Most breeds will start laying at about six months old, very early maturing breeds can offer their first eggs after the fifth month while others like Araucana may take up to 8 moths before the first eggs are laid. A good source of information is Hendersons chicken Breed chart for individual breed information.

At what age does a hen stop laying eggs?

Egg production varies with the breed of chicken. In general, chicks start their egg laying at about 5 to 6 months old and reach peak production at about two years. Egg laying starts to decline at about three years. As the chicken ages, egg production is less reliable until they stop completely. Non productive chickens can live up to as old as 12 years.

What age do quail start laying eggs?

Here's my limited experience: Bobwhite quail hatched on 5/13/09. One egg was laid on 9/16/09. No other eggs to date. I have 5 males and 7 females housed together in a 3X5 raised pen. The pen is outdoors in Georgia. I had read that egg laying begins at 5-6 months, but one of mine obviously laid at 4 months. The shell was thin in some spots and thicker in other, which I'm told is typical for the first egg or two.
