There is no real documentation that anybody really invented a doughnut. Some believe in the Pony Express era that one of the riders loved his girlfriends sweet buns, but had no time time stop and get one while he passed he house along the trail. So she decided to put a hole through the middle of them so he could ride by and "hook" the sweet bun with his finger, thus making the doughnut.
