OK. First, it depends on when your birthday is.

All US states have a requirement that a child be 5 years old by a certain date to enter kindergarten, the first year of formal education. It's usually sometime in September, but sometimes not till October, and some states have it as late as December.

After kindergarten is 1st grade, so most kids are 6 when they start. That means that by 5th grade, most kids are 10 when they start.

At the beginning of the school year, there may be some 9 year olds, but they will be 10 by the end of September in most cases (but again, some states have late cut-off dates so in those places, the youngest kids could be 9 all the way up until December).

All kids who are born from January to May/June (whenever the school year ends), many who were born between October and December, and some born in September (in places with an early September 1st cut-off) will turn 11 in the fifth grade. Kids with summer birthdays are 10 for the whole 5th grade year and simply turn 11 the summer after it.

Some kids could turn 12 during 5th grade, if they ever had to repeat a year in school and got behind.
