Poe was 18 when he first published his writing in 1827. However, he was only about 17 when he wrote his first poem, "O, Tempora, O, Mores" which was not published during his lifetime. In late 1824 while nearing the age of 16, Poe wrote the following lines:

Edgar Allan Poe's writing was first published in 1827 when he was 18 and a half years old in a small volume of poetry titled "Tamerlane and Other Poems" containing 9 poems and about 40 pages that went largely unnoticed even after his death. When Poe published his second volume of poetry "Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems" in 1829, his claims of an earlier edition were considered untrue. It is now one of the rarest and most valuable books ever printed with only about 12 copies known to exist.
