Joseph Smith never broke his leg. When Joseph was 7, there was an outbreak of Typhus, which Joseph fell victim to. As Joseph was recovering a fever sore was found on his shoulder. A doctor treated the shoulder, but the sore moved to his lower left leg. The leg swelled up and for two weeks Joseph was in constant pain. A doctor did a surgery to drain the leg, but the pain returned as the wound began to heal. It was found that the infection had entered the bone, and doctors said they would have to amputate the leg. Joseph's mother requested that they try to take out just the diseased part of the bone and tissue, which they did. This was one of the first times a surgery of this type was performed.
It took several years for Joseph to fully recover, but his bone regenerated. He used crutches for three years and walked with a limp for the remainder of his life.
