When did Muhammad became a prophet of Islam?

At the age of 40 years 6 months and 10 days, Muhammad was meditating in Cave Hira when suddenly Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) came and told him to read. Muhammad was illeterate so he said he couldn't read. Jibreel hugged him tightly and again told him to read. After this happened three times, Muhammad found he could read the first verses of the Quran that were revealed (Surah Alaq, The Clot( Surah 96)).

Prophet Muhammad became a prophet of Islam at the age of 40 years old. When he saw Gabriel, an angel on top of a mountain. He used to go to the mountain to worship Allah, Hidden from the people who did not believe in prophet Muhammad. The angel told him to read, read the Qur'an. Muhammad couldn't read it, he didn't even know what one word meant. Its like saying you are from America and someone is telling you to read something you don't know. Again, Gabriel told Muhammad to "read" He told him just follow me and that is what did and he read it right, somehow. When he was done he had a terrible fever. He ran and ran home in shock. In year 610 AD when he was 40 years old. It started by the start of revelation of first verses of Quran by Allah (or God in English and same God in Christianity and Judaism) to prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the angel Gabriel (or Jibril). God revelation of Quran, Muslims Holy Book, started in year 610 AD (when prophet Muhammad was 40 years old) through the year 632 AD (year of death of prophet Muhammad PBUH).

For years after his marriage, Muhammad had been accustomed to secluding himself in a cave in Mount Hira, a few miles from Mecca. To this cave he used to go for prayer and meditation, sometimes alone and sometime with his family. There, he often spent the whole nights in deep thought and profound communion with the Unseen yet All-Knowing Allah of the Universe. It was during one of those retirements, in year 610 AD, and in the still hours of the night, when no human sympathy was near, that Angel Gabriel (Jibril) came to him to tell him that he was the Messenger of Allah sent to reclaim a fallen people to the knowledge and service of their Lord. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) then started receiving God Quran revelation to him, through the Angel Gabriel, from year 610 AD until year 632 AD (year of prophet death).
