However, he was probably born very early in the first century and died in Rome by crucifixion about the year 65 AD. That would place him in his 60s. Archaeologists examining the bones from his tomb at Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican confirm that they came from a man in his 60s.

One tadition is that the mid-second century pope Anicetus (156-166) was locked in a conflict with Polycarp of Smyrna on a matter of theology. Polycarp had tried to win the argument by insisting that he spoke with the authority of the apostle John. In response, Anicetus said that Peter was beheaded by Nero in Rome and said that he spoke with the authority of Peter. Thus Anicetus was placing the date of Peter's death between 54 and 68 CE, the reign of Nero. A later version of the story is that Peter was not beheaded, but crucified upside down. However, there is no reason to believe that Peter ever visited Rome. Everything that has come down to us relies on a spurious claim by the bishop of Rome, probably around a hundred years after the event.
