The Bible does not explicitly say how old Jesus was at the time, but Luke 2:22 locates this event as happening "when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses." A woman was ritually impure for 40 days after the birth of a son. Leviticus 12:2-4 says: "Say to the Israelites: 'A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her monthly period. On the eighth day the boy is to be circumcised. Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the days of her purification are over." Jesus was born in Bethlehem, just 6 miles from Jerusalem, so it was an easy day's walk to get to the Temple. So in all likelihood, Jesus wasn't much more than 40 days old when Simeon saw him in the Temple.
Simeon believed that the Infant Jesus was the Messiah that had been predicted to come into the world, as he had been told by the Holy Spirit that he would see the Messiah before he died and on that day the Spirit had led him to come to the temple .
The old man Simeon and Anna were there.
Anna was a prophetess and Simeon was a prophet.
Simeon was a righteous and devout man who lived in Jerusalem. The Holy Spirit revealed to him that he would die before he saw the Messiah. Simeon went to the temple and held the Christ Child, and blessed the family. The prophet Anna was a widow who never left the temple after her husband passed away seven years after her wedding. She spread the news about the Christ Child to everyone in Jerusalem looking for redemption.
The passage in which Simeon blessed the baby Jesus and prophesied great things was an opportunity to prove to the readers of Luke's Gospel that Jesus was indeed the son of God. For some reason, Simeon, alone of all people, had been promised that he would not die before he saw the Lord's Anointed (Christ). Simeon recognised Jesus as the Christ as soon as he saw him, and blessed the young family. The author of Luke often used repetition to ensure certainty among his readers, so the story of Simeon was immediately followed by the story of Anna the prophetess.
Luke 2:36-38 tells us that Anna, a prophetess, from the tribe of Asher, was an 84 year old widow, when she saw Jesus at the temple.
The Nunc Dimittus.
Jesus was eight days old when Anna saw Him in the Temple.
Simeon, who saw the baby Jesus, was neither an apostle or disciple. He was a prophet and teacher. Simon Peter was also referred to as Simeon, in which case he was both an apostle and disciple.
In Luke 2:22 Mary and Joseph take Jesus to the temple to present Him to the Lord. There was a man in the temple by the name of Simeon. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that he would see the Lord's Christ before he died. He recognized Jesus as that Messiah. Then in verse 36 we are introduced to Anna, a prophetess who lived in the temple night and day praying. She also saw Jesus and spoke to the Lord and gave Him thanks for the Messiah Jesus.
