Tutankhamen (1341 B.C.E - 1323 B.C.E) was the son of Pharaoh Amenhotep III of Egypt and one of Amenhotep's many wives. Which wife was his mother is unknown. He became Pharaoh at age eight or nine and "reigned" for about ten years until his early death at about eighteen years of age. The cause of this death is uncertain. Some archaeologists and forensic specialists who have examined his tomb, mummy, and skeleton, as well as many historians, believe he was murdered. Either that, or he suffered a traumatic skull fracture from an accident of some kind. Some believe it may have been a murder disguised as an accident. The politics of Egypt were complicated at the time. The young Pharaoh had been under the guardianship of one of several of the competing factions and rivals for power of the time. He certainly had no power of his own as a child. Perhaps he was killed because he was about to come of age and had started to act like a real Pharaoh in his own right. The ceremony and pomp suggested by his elaborate burial indicates he had great popularity...at least among some. Historians have looked to his successors as the potential and most likely murderers. A sad story at any rate.
