So many men were away from home that women were able to take over many of the jobs left vacant. The wives of service men moved in with relatives. Doors or windows of homes had stars posted to show how many service men were from that family. Materials that were needed for the war effort were used for the war,so those items were very scarce for the people at home. For example, car tires were bald or had very little tread. Alot of people planted gardens called "victory gardens".Alot of effort went in to volunteer work aimed at helping troops such as USO work, rolling and packing bandages,and writing letters.
