Well linux is free so you never have to pay when a new versions comes out, its also faster and less hardware demanding for an example i installed puppy linux on a old windows ME machine and puppy linux only used 68mb of ram and 87mb of ram when i used skype and web browser, and was able to do everything id normally do on newer hardware.

Linux itself isn't an operating system, it's a type of operating system. Some Operating Systems called Linux include:

• Ubuntu
• Kubuntu
• Xubuntu
• Fedora
• DSL (D*** Small Linux)

If Linux is a good operating system, like most computer software, depends on how much you know about using it. If you don't know how to use it, Ubuntu is a worthless piece of junk that can't even run exe files. (Well, it can run exe files using a program called WINE, but I won't get into that now.) If you excell at computers (Not to brag, but - like me) then Linux may be the way to go. But it may not be the best idea to overwrite Windows with Linux, as most people in the world use Windows, and you may need to use a specific file only Windows can open. In this case you can dual boot, which means to run two operating systems on one computer. Before installing Linux though, I'd suggest looking at some Linux tutorials - especially on how to install it without harming any other operating systems in any way.
