vancomycin is the antibiotic of choice for MRSA, injected intravenously.

A little more...Vancomycin may be a good place to start in treating MRSA, but VRSA strains now exist too. Beyond vancomycin, we look to daptomycin and linezolid, among other new antibiotics. Sept-2011.

MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Streptococcus aureus) is a contact-borne pathogenic bacterium most often considered to be an iatrogenic disorder; health care itself is strongly involved in its transmission. The strain in question is resistant to many antibiotic medications, especially of the penicillin family. It is not uncommonly treated with Vancomycin.

The first and most critical steps in preventing the spread or MRSA are prophylaxis -- keeping the area clean. This includes and is not limited to:

  • Changing gloves between patients
  • Using proper care in contagion procedures
  • Washing hands frequently
  • Changing gowns in cases where there's a chance of transmission from patient to patient.
  • Early identification of MRSA
  • Selection of proper, effective antibiotic
