check your electric supply. maybe you dont have the full 240v to the unit. if only one "phase" (120v) the dryer wont tumble and washer wont run. only the dryers heater uses the full 240. if only the washer is out after checking power, check the lid switch if its bad washer will only do what it would with lid open. The USA Asko combo series runs on 110V, which is unusual for a clothes dryer. A USA dryer usually runs on 220V and has its own dedicated circuit breaker, but the Asko can run on a standard household outlet which probably shares a breaker with other outlets in the house. A clothes dryer takes a lot of current. According to the specs on most Asko combos I looked at online, your unit probably uses close to the maximum current your breaker can handle. If you are using other electrical devices at the same time, you will blow the circuit. It may even be the use of overhead lighting if it shares the same breaker. One more thing on Asko: According to many of the online reviews, the 110V combos have a tendancy to have overheating problems in the wiring when using both washer and dryer simultaneously. I would suspect that this is due to not cleaning the lint screens, so be diligent. A dirty lint screen causes the dryer to work extra hard and draw more current.

This isn't an answer- it's from the questioner :) Just to clarify: This is the small, apartment-sized, stacked washer-dryer unit. They used to commonly come in 110V. They are still out there but old and sell for same price used as the used newer 220V. So we'd like to buy a newer used 220V and convert if possible and safe. Don't know the watts on these, tho. But must not be as large as regular sized dryers?

Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hz power supply service. I have never seen a surge bar that has the availability to connect a 30 amp circuit on it at 240 volts. These types of appliances use a dedicated circuit directly connected to the electrical panel. The washer usually has a 15 amp dedicated breaker and the dryer being 240 volt has a dedicated two pole 30 amp breaker. Maybe, but likely not significantly.Older equipment does not generally use power when they are turned off and this action does not save power.Some new equipment never turns off. This is especially true if it has a timer for delayed start. There will be a small power drain even when the unit appears to be off. However, turning of the unit will result in these features not working and potential reset of the setting each time the unit is shut off with the surge bar (power strip).
