Josephus, who would have been familiar with the Temple veil before the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE, describes the curtain and its images and colours in considerable detail (Wars of the Jews, Book 5), saying that it was made of flax. Based on his description, the curtain was not particularly thick. Interestingly, Josephus makes no mention of any damage to it, or any repairs.
The temple curtain was 4inches thick.(the length was 60 feet. The width was 30 feet. And the weight ws in the region of 4 tons.It took 300 men to hold it.).
It is estimated that the veil or curtain in the Temple was four to six inches thick. It was made from woven goat's hair and very strong.
The tradition is that it was one handbreadth thick (Talmud, Tamid 29b).
