#1 if the car has just been recently driven let it 20 min to cool the oil in side of it
#2 raise the car on the opposite side of the oil pan,(if located in the middle raise both front sides.
#3 have a big pan where the old oil can go in to and set it underneath the oil pan big bold
#4 remove the bolt which allows the oil to come out from the whole system
#5 when there is no more oil coming out put the bolt back and remove the oil filter
#6 replace the oil filter with a new one and carefully put it back(do not mess up the thread)
#7 with the oil filter and the bolt in place you can go ahead and add oil through the oil can from on top of the engine(consult your manual book and how many quarts of oil and what type)
#8 put the cap back and lower the car to the ground and start it. let it run for a good 3-4 min and there you have it

According to the 2006 Ford Focus Owner Guide : For the 2.0 and 2.3 liter four cylinder engines : With engine oil filter change : ( 4.5 U.S. quarts / 4.3 litres of engine oil )
If it's a newer year Focus I'd say it's letting you know it's gone longer than the recommended mileage to change the oil. My BMW assumes 6000 miles is the preferred mileage to change the oil, but its recommended to change the oil sooner in my opinion. Clean oil makes engines last longer in the long run.

you get it checked but don't change it. you get it checked but don't change it.Ridiculous! Air filters are "normally" changed with every oil change. I'm highly suspicious that Ford is using Focus owners a guinea pigs with this ting.
