I don't remember the name of the comedian but her statement that the grass grows the best over the septic tank is a good starting place if the house is occupied and it hasn't rained in a long time. Otherwise, use the same method used to located caskets in an old grave yard. (I did this as a boy scout with the sextant of St James Church in Elmhurst, NY) Obtain a long steel rod 5 or 6 feet long, locate where the drain line exits the house, gently push the rod down into the soil to tap on the pipe, when found, follow it out to first a holding tank and than to the septic tank itself. If found , take measurements from two stationary points( two corners of the house is good) and make a permanent chart for future use. Note : If the house isn't in use, there will be no noticeable difference in the grass where the tank is. Also, a piece of rebar will work ,but be much harder to push into the soil or retrieve. Grease on the rod helps also. A lot of work, but sometimes one gets lucky.
