Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was released almost a decade before Sonic Adventure 2, which was the first game to feature Shadow. There is no way to play as Shadow in Sonic 2, short of hacking it, of course.

∙ 13y agoShadow is awakened by Dr. Eggman, he helps Eggman attempt to take over the world using the Eclipse cannon. When Earth is about to be destroyed, Shadow is convinced by Amy to help Sonic save Earth. He uses too much energy within his Super form, he passes out and falls from space supposedly dead. But he is rescued by one of Eggman's robots, as we find out in the Shadow the Hedgehog game while fighting Devil Doom.
