With the use of interface standards, PBX phone systems can be extended or expanded. In order to enable data collection for a PBX system you will require at least one of the following interfaces:

  • File - he most simple standard wherein a PBX generate a file containing the data collected.
  • Network Port - utilizes a port, application or buffer in order for the PBX to send an information.
  • Serial Interface - enables data to be sent one bit a time over a communication channel.

What is the difference between loop start and ground start?

The typical analog circuit that connects between the customer premises and the central office (phone company) has two copper wires. These wires are referred to as TIP and RING. There is typically a -48 VDC signal between the TIP and RING wires which is typically powered by the central office switch. When a standard analog phone is connected to the analog circuit and the handset is picked up (going off hook) a switch on the phone closes the connection between the TIP and RING wires and current is drawn from the central office switch. The switch determines that current is being drawn and provides dial tone so the person on the phone knows it is time to dial a number. A PBX FXO circuit running loop start looks like a standard analog phone to the central office switch. Now, one problem that is often seen with loop start circuits is a condition called "glare". Glare occurs when a call comes in on the analog line from the central office at the same time the PBX wants to seize the same line to make an outgoing call. The ground start protocol was designed to eliminate this problem with glare. From the PBX side, the RING lead is grounded first, then the central office circuit must ground the TIP lead before the PBX can close the loop between TIP and RING.

Can software be used to make a phone call appear to come from another phone number A bomb threat was made using a phone number that was not able to make out going calls?

No. It would take 'spoofing' the information provided to the phone company. This would normally require rerouting a call through a controlled PBX (private branch exchange) to provide the incorrect outbound caller id.

What is a PRI?

A PRI (Primary Rate Interface) is a telecommunication standard used in the Integrated Services Digital Network or ISDN, for carrying multiple DS0 voice and data transmissions between two physical locations. PRI was developed specifically for industrial or large quantity users. PRI is an industrial ISDN line while the Basic Rate Interface, or BRI, is used to cater to home and small enterprises. Both Primary Rate Interface and Basic Rate Interface are made up of a number of B channels and D channels. B Channel or the Bearer Channel is used for data transmission, including voice, and D channel is meant for signaling and control. A PRI is made up of 23 B-channels and one 64 Kbps D-channel in a T-1 configuration and 30 B-channels and 1 D-channel using an E1 line. The T-carrier system is standard in Japan, US and Canada, while E1 is popular across Europe and Australia. In other words, in North America and Japan PRI is represented as 23B+D with a total bit rate of 1.544 Mbit/s (T1) while it is 30B+D in Australia and Europe, which is equivalent to a bit rate of 2.048 Mbit/s (E1). The Primary Rate Interface makes use of the Q.931 protocol over the D channel. A PRI is typically used to establish communication between a PBX, or a private branch exchange, which is a telephone exchange operated by the customer of a telephone company, and a Central Office of the telephone company or an Inter Exchange Carrier or IXC, a long distance telephone company. The advantage of primary rate interface or PRI is that the 23 or 30 B channels can be used in various combinations for specific data transmission needs, such as a videoconferencing, allowing bulk data transfer to be achieved more flexibly.
