LEO the lion says GER.

L osing Electrons is Oxidation

G aining Electrons is Reduction

if something is losing electrons it is oxidized. find the oxidation numbers (ON) using the Periodic Table. The most electronegative molecule keeps its original charge, while the others are modified to ensure the net charge is obtained.

After finding all the oxidation numbers, look at your equation, and cancel out any numbers that maintain the same charge.

Remember, electrons are negatively charged, so if something is gaining electrons the number becomes more negative.

see which elements gain electrons from the left of the equation to the right, and which ones reduce.
