If your drywall is in good shape and not soft, you can remove mold from your walls by simply mixing some bleach in a bucket with water and use a sponge to scrub it off. It might not be a fun solution, but it works very well. If the mold is over a large area and you know there was water damage, you should bring in a professional to remediate the mold and replace the wall. Mold is a health hazard.

Mold can damage your home and your health. The following advice tells you how to clean mold from the walls of your house and keep it off.

Size up the moldy area

First, you need to decide if you have a large or small area of mold. A small area is less than 10 square feet. If your area is larger than that you should consider professional mold removal. Seal the area from the rest of the house. Remember to always use protection. You need to wear gloves, goggles and breathing protection around mold. Make sure you cover all heat registers and ventilation ducts and remove all furnishings from the room. Open a window before you start to clean.

Never just paint over mold. Mold continues to grow even under paint. Cleaning

Bag any moldy items and take them outside right away. Place them in a garbage container. Mold is removable from hard surfaces only. If your wall is glass, plastic or metal, you can scrub it with a non-ammonia soap or detergent. If your wall is made of a porous material, such as sheetrock, you must remove the affected wall area. If mold is on the wall stud, you need to scrub it. If scrubbing does not remove the mold from the wall stud, then sanding is your next step. Disinfect the area after the mold is removed. Bleach and water is a good choice for disinfection. A solution of 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of bleach to one gallon of water should do the trick. The surface needs to remain wet for 15 minutes to insure it is properly disinfected. Then rinse the area and dry with fans.

Once you have removed your mold, remember that moisture prevention is the only way to keep the area free from mold in the future. Fix any leaks, and make sure you have adequate ventilation.

What is the difference between air duct cleaning and mold removal?

Air duct cleaning generally refers to the cleaning of cooling and heating system components, including the air ducts themselves, as well as heating and cooling coils, drain pans, fans and more. Mold may or may not be present in any of these components. Mold needs moisture to grow. If moisture is present, like if your air conditioning unit is leaking, microbiological growth may occur and mold spores from such growth may be released into your home. Often, air duct service providers will attempt to correct this situation by applying chemical biocides to kill microbial growth (e.g. mold). However, it is important to note that most air duct service providers are not certified in removing mold; rather, they will remove visible dust and debris in cooling and heating systems. Mold removal, on the other hand, involves the actual inspection, removal and remediation of a mold infested area. It is recommended to contact a mold remediation specialist who is certified with the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration. These specialists are trained to completely remove, remediate and restore your property. In addition, more and more remediation companies like www.drymeout.com are using natural mold disinfectants rather than chemicals. In general, it is important to note that if there is mold growth, whether in your ducts or anywhere on your property, the condition that is causing mold growth must be corrected or mold growth will reoccur. In sum, if you suspect mold growth in your air ducts, it would be wise to contact a certified mold remediation specialist who can completely remove the mold in your home and remediate it.
