How to Set timing on nissan sentra 1600cc 1989 model
The thermostat on a 1989 Nissan Sentra is on the front of the motor to the left. It is just below where the valve cover meets top of the manifold. The thermostat is enclosed in the radiator hose at that location.
Inside the fuel tank, on the top.

You don't. 89 sentra does not have a timing belt, instead it has timing chain. I have the 1989 Nissan Sentra 1.6L 4-dr sedan. My timing chain needs to be replaced. It runs inside the motor. It is a big task for an auto mechanic to replace it. It will cost me at a *trustworthy* business $470 for part(s) and labor to replace it. Expect it to take a whole day for the car to be in the shop.
Using a screwdriver, remove the screws and the clips that hold the panel to the door frame. Gently pull the panel, reach behind it and remove the wiring connectors, and the panel should come free.
