Andrew Carnegie was considered selfish because he accumulated immense wealth through his steel empire while paying low wages to his workers and engaging in anti-union practices. He also practiced social Darwinism, believing that the wealthy had a duty to support society but should not redistribute their wealth during their lifetime.

Andrew Carnegie was not ruthless in person. He was kind and gentle. However, he had ruthless people working directly under him. When the steel workers were about to strike, Carnegie would suddenly need to go on a trip to a far away distant place. His henchmen would take care of the problems. Then he would come back and try to put everything back together.
