It started when families put food on their doorsteps to ward off hungry spirits from coming into their houses. That's all i know, but i suspect that beggars came and took the food for themselves. Then maybe the families got the idea to hand out food. They may have started handing out sweets as well. Then perhaps they started dressing up as spirits and stuff. I really dont know, but thats my theory. I hope this was helpful.
believe it or not , Halloween was started by the very people who oppose it. Halloween is the day before the church holyday of all saints day and to prevent the devil from taking innocent souls to hell the people dressed in costumes so the evil spirits would not take them away. unfortunitly the Christian Churches is now opposed to Halloween because of a lot of the costumes depict allegience or so they say, to satanic propgation. so Halloween started out to be a safety net against evilness and has turned into a big thing with hundreds of dollars being spent on costumes as well as one of the biggest candy selling seasons of the year
