Almost none. The main aim of whaling in Japan is to limit the number of whales (especially minke whales) that consume large quantities of fish and so reduce fishing yields. Whale meat is sold in high class Tokyo restaurants and very few modern-day Japanese have eaten it.

Not all whaling is Japanese whaling. They get the most fame because they kill many whale (almost 1000 in the southern ocean every year, along with hundreds off their coast). Norway, Iceland, and some aboriginal tribes also kill whales, but not as many as Japan.
