Nixon didn't tell the people about it, instead he wanted to cover it up to look good. When people found out about it, their trust for him went down because he didn't tell them, and then, he denied it. If he would have told the people about how he didn't want any of that to happen in his country and he didn't try to cover it up, he may have been reelected. He didn't even know it happened until he heard just after, which would have been fine if he didn't try to cover it up.

He did not resign from Watergate. He resigned his presidency of the US over his involvement in Watergate. He did this because he knew he would be impeached and in resigning he cut a deal that pardoned him from subsequent criminal prosecution.
