Robespierre was finally forced from power through a combination of political and popular opposition. In July 1794, his rivals in the National Convention turned against him and had him arrested. Additionally, public sentiment had grown increasingly wary of his radical policies and the Reign of Terror, leading to his downfall. Robespierre was ultimately executed by guillotine on July 28, 1794.
