Dalí refused to explicitly denounce fascism. Among other factors, this had landed him in trouble with his colleagues. Later in 1934, Dalí was subjected to a "trial", in which he was formally expelled from the Surrealist group.
Earlier Dali had been expelled from San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in 1924. Apparently Dali was criticizing his professors. Administrators believed that Dali was disrupting the peace.
It was more his way of life than his works that was controversial. He loved to attract attention at all costs.
He was no such thing. Only some of the surrealists felt Dali thought too highly of himself.
They did not agree on politics (left - right wing).
Because in his exam he was asked to describe Rafael but he refused claiming that he knew more about him than the examiners and so they were not competent enough to judge or grade him.
